Mahindra XEV 9e Review – Real World Range & Charging

    support@wheelxpress.comBy support@wheelxpress.comJuly 3, 2026No Comments7 Mins Read

Mahindra’s electric transformation has been nothing short of ambitious, and the XEV 9e sits at the pinnacle of that vision. Built on the bespoke INGLO electric platform developed in partnership with Volkswagen Group technology, the XEV 9e is a tech-laden electric SUV that takes on the likes of the Tata Harrier EV and Hyundai Ioniq 5 in the Indian market. It represents Mahindra’s most serious statement yet in the premium EV segment — and after extensive road testing across multiple Indian conditions, we can say it very nearly delivers on all its promises.

    Design & Exterior

The XEV 9e’s design is a significant departure from anything Mahindra has produced before. The exterior follows the brand’s new “Timeless Allure” design language, featuring a fastback roofline that gives it coupe-SUV proportions — a body style increasingly popular globally. The front end is dominated by a glowing infinity-inspired LED DRL strip that connects across the bonnet and sweeps down the front fenders, creating a dramatic first impression. There is no conventional grille — just a smooth, closed front face with aerodynamically optimised lower air intakes. Twin rear wings and a connected full-width LED tail-light complete the look. Available in five colours including a striking copper-toned premium option, the XEV 9e cuts a genuinely premium figure. At 4,789 mm in length and 1,905 mm in width, it is a substantial vehicle that commands attention on Indian roads.

    Interior & Cabin Technology

The cabin of the XEV 9e is where Mahindra has invested most heavily, and it shows. Three screens dominate the dashboard: a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch front passenger screen — all connected in a sweeping horizontal panel. The system runs on the newest generation of Mahindra’s MAIA (Mahindra Artificial Intelligence Architecture) software, offering over-the-air updates, voice commands via Alexa, and deep integration with Mahindra’s connected car ecosystem. The interior materials are genuinely premium — real leather, brushed aluminium trim, and soft-touch door panels throughout. A panoramic fixed glass roof floods the cabin with light. The rear seat is flat-floored thanks to the skateboard platform, making the back row feel genuinely spacious for three adults. Optional ADAS includes 19 features such as adaptive cruise, highway assist, automated parking, and blind spot intervention.

    Battery & Range

The XEV 9e is offered with two battery options: a 59 kWh unit for the entry trims and a 79 kWh pack for the top variants. Our test was conducted primarily with the 79 kWh version. In real-world mixed conditions across Pune’s city roads and NH-48 highway driving, we recorded consistent efficiency of 6.5–6.8 km/kWh, translating to a usable range of approximately 490–510 km — well ahead of the Tata Harrier EV in outright range. The INGLO platform’s battery management system is sophisticated: it actively pre-conditions the battery before DC fast charging when navigation is set to a charger, reducing charge time by up to 15%. In peak summer (40°C ambient), range dropped by approximately 8%, which is in line with international benchmarks. For highway driving between Mumbai and Pune (170 km one way), the XEV 9e completes the journey with comfortable margin to spare without intermediate charging.

    Charging Infrastructure & Speed

The XEV 9e supports up to 175 kW DC fast charging — the highest in any India-made electric vehicle currently. When paired with a compatible 175 kW charger, a 0–80% charge takes approximately 30 minutes. At the more common 50 kW chargers found across Tata Power and ChargeZone networks, the same 0–80% charge takes around 90 minutes. Mahindra has partnered with multiple CPOs (Charge Point Operators) to expand charging availability, and XEV 9e owners get complimentary public charging credits for the first year. Home charging via the 11 kW AC unit needs a three-phase connection, which is standard in most independent houses and newer apartment complexes in urban India but may require an upgrade in older buildings. Mahindra’s FOTA (firmware over the air) has also pushed updates that improve charging curve efficiency based on real-world battery temperature data.

    Performance & Driving Experience

In RWD 282 bhp trim, the XEV 9e is seriously rapid — 0–100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. The AWD variant drops this to under 5.5 seconds. Power delivery is linear and confidence-inspiring rather than aggressive. Three driving modes — Everyday, Race, and Custom — offer distinct characters. Race mode sharpens throttle response significantly and stiffens the adaptive dampers (on top trim), transforming the XEV 9e into a genuinely entertaining canyon carver. Regenerative braking offers four levels, the highest of which allows near-complete one-pedal driving. Mahindra’s software team deserves credit for the calibration: the regen feel is smooth and progressive, unlike the abrupt regen behaviour of some competitors. The steering is well-weighted and communicates road texture adequately, giving drivers confidence on undulating highways.

    Ride & Handling

The XEV 9e rides on 19-inch wheels and an independent suspension setup at all four corners. Ride quality over smooth city tarmac is excellent — quiet and composed. Speed bumps at moderate speeds are absorbed well, though at higher entry speeds, the car can feel firmer than expected. The optional electronically controlled adaptive suspension (on Empowered+ trim) allows riders to soften the setup for broken roads, significantly improving comfort. Body roll is minimal thanks to the low centre of gravity. At 190 mm ground clearance, the XEV 9e handles typical Indian road imperfections without drama. Highway lane stability above 130 km/h is impeccable.

    Safety Features

The XEV 9e is built to Euro NCAP 2025 standards, with Mahindra targeting a 5-star rating. The car features 7 airbags, three-point rear centre seat belt, electronic stability control, traction control, hill descent control, and automatic vehicle hold. ADAS features (ADAS Level 2+) on top trims include adaptive cruise control with lane centring, automated emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, and driver attention monitoring. The INGLO platform features a protected battery compartment with multiple layers of thermal runaway prevention and an emergency disconnect system that severs high-voltage connections within milliseconds of detecting a collision.

    Price, Variants & Running Costs

    Variant Battery Ex-showroom (Delhi)
    MX1 59 kWh ₹21.90 lakh
    MX2 Pro 59 kWh ₹24.90 lakh
    MX3 Pro 79 kWh ₹27.90 lakh
    MX5 Pack 79 kWh AWD ₹30.50 lakh

At home charging rates (₹8/unit), running cost is approximately ₹1.22/km for the 79 kWh pack. This compares to around ₹8.50/km for a comparable petrol SUV. A buyer covering 18,000 km per year could save over ₹1.3 lakh annually. Mahindra provides 8-year / 1.6 lakh km battery warranty across all variants.

    Pros & Cons

    Pros Cons
Industry-leading 175 kW fast charging 11 kW AC needs 3-phase connection
Best-in-class real-world range (79 kWh) Rear roof height slightly restricted by fastback
Triple-screen premium cabin ADAS only on top trims
Flat-floor rear thanks to skateboard platform Adaptive suspension only on Empowered+
OTA updates for continuous improvement Service network still developing for INGLO platform

    Verdict

The Mahindra XEV 9e is an exceptional achievement — India’s most technologically advanced mass-market electric vehicle. The 175 kW fast charging, over 500 km real-world range, and genuinely premium interior set a new benchmark for the segment. Its only genuine weaknesses are in areas that will improve over time: the charging network and service infrastructure for the new INGLO platform. For an early adopter or a city-based executive buyer, the XEV 9e is an easy recommendation. It competes on equal terms with EVs costing significantly more and signals loud and clear that Indian engineering has arrived on the global EV stage.
