Toyota Fortuner Legender Review – Premium SUV Tested

    support@wheelxpress.comBy support@wheelxpress.comJuly 3, 2026No Comments6 Mins Read

The Toyota Fortuner needs no introduction in India. For over a decade, it has been the aspirational benchmark in the premium body-on-frame SUV segment — the car that successful Indians park outside their businesses and drive on family holidays. The Legender variant takes this further with sportier styling and added features. But with updated rivals and rising electric alternatives, does the Fortuner Legender still justify its premium price tag? We drove it on the Mumbai–Nashik highway to find out.

    Quick Specifications

    Parameter Details
    Engine 2.8L 1GD-FTV Diesel
    Power 201 bhp (4WD AT) / 163 bhp (2WD)
Torque 500 Nm (AT) / 420 Nm (MT)
    Transmission 6-MT / 6-AT
    Drivetrain 4WD (with low-range) / 2WD
    Ground Clearance 225 mm
Boot Space 296 litres (7-seat config)
    Seating 7
    ARAI Mileage ~14.9 km/l (AT 4WD)
    Ex-showroom Price (starting) ₹33.99 lakh (Legender 4×4)

    Design & Exterior

The Legender differentiates itself from the standard Fortuner primarily through its bi-beam LED headlamps, a sportier front bumper with a darker lower grille, and Legender-specific badging. The overall silhouette remains the broad-shouldered, commanding shape that made the Fortuner an Indian icon. At 4,795 mm in length and 1,855 mm in width, it is one of the largest SUVs in its segment and projects an authority on the road that smaller monocoque SUVs simply cannot replicate.

The 18-inch alloy wheels, available in multiple finishes, fill the wide arches smartly. Ground clearance of 225 mm is among the best in any production SUV in India — genuinely useful for the kind of terrain many Fortuner owners tackle: forest tracks, unmetalled village roads, and waterlogged urban stretches during monsoon. The Fortuner’s road presence is undiminished. In Attitude Black, the Legender looks genuinely intimidating in the best possible way.

    Interior & Cabin Quality

The Fortuner’s interior reflects its price positioning: a blend of understated premiumness and functional durability. The dashboard uses solid, well-finished materials; switchgear quality is Toyota-benchmark excellent — every button has a satisfying, precise action. The 8-inch infotainment screen is adequate but visually dated compared to the twin 10+ inch setups in rival SUVs like the MG Gloster or Jeep Meridian. Leather upholstery, a powered driver seat, and a panoramic sunroof come on the Legender.

Seven-seat practicality is the Fortuner’s primary calling — second-row passengers get generous legroom and a reclining backrest. Third-row seats fold flat for cargo duties when not carrying passengers. The cabin feels hewn for longevity — Toyota’s interior quality ethos prioritises durability alongside premiumness, and this SUV feels like it will be as solid in 200,000 km as it is today. Toyota’s legendary reliability record makes this an important consideration.

    Infotainment & Technology

The Fortuner Legender features Toyota’s latest 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wired). A JBL 11-speaker premium audio system, a connected car system via Toyota i-Connect, and a 360-degree camera round out the technology package. The i-Connect app allows remote engine start, climate pre-conditioning, and trip history tracking.

ADAS is limited to Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert, and Automatic High Beam control — modest by 2026 standards but reliable implementations. Toyota has prioritised proven technology over feature overload — a philosophy that divides opinion but has served its reliability reputation well.

    Engine & Performance

The 2.8L diesel engine is where the Fortuner earns its premium. In 4WD guise, 201 bhp and 500 Nm of torque combine to deliver effortless performance — it feels significantly more relaxed at highway speeds than smaller-engined rivals. The 6-speed automatic gearbox is smooth and intelligent in its gear selection; kickdown response is immediate and the transmission never hunts between gears. Towing capability (3,100 kg braked) is a meaningful additional benefit for those who tow boats, caravans, or farm equipment.

Real-world diesel mileage of 12–15 km/l on the Mumbai-Nashik highway is reasonable given the vehicle’s size and performance envelope. In the city, expect 9–11 km/l. Running costs are mitigated by Toyota’s exceptional long-term reliability and strong resale values — a Fortuner holds its value better than almost any SUV in India.

    Ride Quality & Handling

Body-on-frame construction means the Fortuner is not as car-like to drive as monocoque rivals. Body roll is present and pronounced in spirited cornering — this is not a vehicle to hustle through hairpin bends. But on its natural terrain — straight highways, occasional off-road sections, and urban roads — it excels. The ride is compliant, absorbing large bumps and undulations in a way that many monocoque SUVs cannot. The 225 mm ground clearance means speed breakers are not obstacles.

The 4WD system with multi-terrain select (Mud, Sand, Rock, etc.) makes the Fortuner genuinely capable off-road. In our test near Nashik’s backcountry tracks, the 4WD system picked its way through loose gravel and muddy farm tracks without drama. This remains one of the most capable off-road SUVs available under ₹40 lakh in India.

    Safety Features

The Fortuner has received significant safety upgrades in recent generations. Seven airbags, ABS, EBD, VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), Hill-Start Assist, Downhill Assist Control, and Active Traction Control are standard on the Legender. The Pre-Collision System actively applies brakes if an imminent collision is detected. ISOFIX child seat anchors fit the second row.

The Fortuner’s body construction is robust — its crash performance is well-proven in real-world incidents in India, where the vehicle has a reputation for protecting occupants effectively in serious accidents. Toyota’s active safety technology may not be as extensive as some European rivals, but the vehicle’s passive safety record is strong.

    Price & Variants

    Variant Ex-showroom Price
    4×2 Manual ₹33.43 lakh
    4×2 Automatic ₹35.98 lakh
    Legender 4×4 Automatic ₹40.67 lakh
GR Sport 4×4 Automatic ₹42.58 lakh

    Pros & Cons

    Pros Cons
Best-in-class resale value Interior tech feels dated vs rivals
225 mm ground clearance Expensive maintenance costs
201 bhp / 500 Nm diesel Limited ADAS suite
Legendary Toyota reliability Body roll in corners
3,100 kg towing capacity Boot space modest for a 7-seater

    Verdict

The Toyota Fortuner Legender remains India’s most aspirational practical SUV — and it earns that status through relentless reliability, real off-road capability, and a diesel engine that sets the benchmark in this class. The technology package may not dazzle against rivals who offer larger screens and more extensive ADAS, but those rivals will not match the Fortuner’s 5-year ownership peace of mind.

Buy the Fortuner Legender if: you need a genuinely capable 7-seater for mixed urban and highway use, you value reliability above all else, or you want the best resale value in the segment. The 4×2 Automatic at ₹35.98 lakh is the sweet spot for most urban families; the 4×4 AT for those who venture off the beaten path regularly. In 2026, the Fortuner remains the gold standard for aspirational Indian families.
