Hyundai Verna Turbo Review 2026 – Sports Sedan Tested

    support@wheelxpress.comBy support@wheelxpress.comJuly 3, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

The Hyundai Verna 2023 generation was a dramatic reinvention of the model — bolder styling, more power, Level 2 ADAS, and a panoramic sunroof at a price that surprised the market. The 2026 Verna Turbo continues to represent the most driver-focused, feature-loaded compact sedan available under ₹18 lakh in India. It competes with the Honda City, Skoda Slavia, and Volkswagen Virtus — but the Verna’s combination of Korean features and turbo performance gives it a unique position. We tested the Verna SX(O) 1.5 Turbo DCT for this deep-dive review.

    Quick Specifications

Parameter 1.5 NA Petrol 1.5 Turbo Petrol
    Engine 1.5L MPi 1.5L T-GDi Turbo
    Power 115 bhp 160 bhp
    Torque 144 Nm 253 Nm

    Starting Price ₹10.90 lakh (ex-showroom)

    Design & Exterior

The Verna’s new-generation design is arguably the most striking in the compact sedan segment. The “Sensuous Sportiness” design language delivers a fastback-esque silhouette with a steeply raked roofline, muscular haunches, and a wide front face featuring Hyundai’s parametric pixel LED DRLs that are unmistakable at night. The Verna is also the widest compact sedan in India at 1,765 mm, giving it a stance that looks more like a sports car than a family sedan. 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels on SX(O) trims complete the assertive exterior. Available in Typhoon Silver, Fiery Red, and Abyss Black — all striking colour choices.

    Interior & Features

The Verna’s cabin is the most feature-loaded in the compact sedan segment. The dual 10.25-inch screen setup (cluster + infotainment), Bose 8-speaker premium audio, ventilated and heated front seats, electric sunroof (panoramic on SX(O)), ambient lighting with 64 colours, wireless charger, and BlueLink connected car platform — the feature list reads like a mid-size SUV, not a compact sedan. Level 2 ADAS on SX(O) is the most comprehensive ADAS suite in the segment: Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Collision Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Collision Warning, and Driver Attention Warning. The 528-litre boot is the segment’s largest.

    Engine & Performance

The 1.5 T-GDi with 7DCT is the headline story. 160 bhp and 253 Nm translate to a 0–100 km/h sprint of 8.3 seconds — the fastest in the compact sedan segment and within striking distance of some hot hatches. The DCT executes gear changes in milliseconds in Sport mode; the paddle shifters add driver engagement. On the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Verna Turbo DCT is genuinely exhilarating — flexible, fast, and composed. The NA IVT is the smooth, relaxed city car. Both engines are BS6 Phase 2 compliant and perform well on Indian premium petrol.

    Mileage & Fuel Efficiency

Real-world 1.5 Turbo DCT returned 14.8 km/l city and 17.2 km/l highway — slightly less than the Slavia and Virtus 1.5 TSI but with more power. The NA IVT achieved 16.4 km/l city and 19.8 km/l highway — the most efficient petrol automatic sedan option in the segment. Running costs for the turbo DCT: approximately ₹9.10 per km city — higher than the Honda City diesel, but justified by the performance and feature premium.

    Ride Quality & Handling

The Verna rides on a well-tuned MacPherson strut front / coupled torsion beam rear setup. Ride quality is comfortable for a performance-oriented sedan — bumps are absorbed without drama. Handling is more sports-car-like than any other compact sedan in India — the DCT variant in Sport mode with its sharper steering and quicker throttle feels genuinely alive. Body roll is minimal. At 140 km/h on national highways, the Verna feels planted and secure. The steering is well-weighted: effortless in city, progressively weighted at speed.

    Safety Features

Six airbags standard (some variants get 2), ESC, ABS, Hill Start Assist, ISOFIX. Level 2 ADAS on SX(O). The Verna scored 5 stars in ASEAN NCAP and is expected to achieve similar results in Bharat NCAP. The combination of structural safety and ADAS makes the Verna the safest compact sedan in India.

    Price & Variants

    Variant Engine Ex-showroom Price
EX 1.5 NA IVT ₹10.90 lakh
    S 1.5 NA IVT / 1.5T MT ₹13.29 – ₹14.40 lakh
    SX 1.5 NA IVT / 1.5T DCT ₹15.39 – ₹16.89 lakh
    SX(O) 1.5T DCT ₹17.89 lakh

    Pros & Cons

    Pros Cons
160 bhp — most powerful compact sedan in India High city fuel consumption for turbo DCT
Level 2 ADAS on SX(O) Only 2 airbags on base EX variant
Bose 8-speaker audio DCT can judder in slow traffic
528L boot — segment best SX(O) is pricey at ₹17.89 lakh
5-star ASEAN NCAP No diesel option

    Verdict

The Hyundai Verna Turbo DCT 2026 is the most complete compact sedan in India. It offers the most power, the most features, the largest boot, and the most comprehensive ADAS in the segment — all in one package. If your budget stretches to the SX(O) at ₹17.89 lakh, it’s the definitive compact sedan. For budget-conscious buyers, the SX 1.5 Turbo DCT at ₹16.89 lakh drops only the ADAS cluster and remains an extraordinary value. Highly recommended.
