The Tesla Model Y’s India launch was one of the most anticipated automotive events in recent memory. After years of rumours and false starts, Tesla’s bestselling global EV finally arrived in India with right-hand-drive configuration and local delivery support. At ₹59.89 lakh ex-showroom for the base variant, the Model Y isn’t cheap — but it brings a fundamentally different ownership experience to Indian roads. We evaluate whether the Tesla Model Y is genuinely worth its price in the Indian context.

Design & Exterior
The Tesla Model Y’s design is deliberately understated — a smooth, aerodynamic body with minimal visual drama. The flush door handles, full-width LED light bar at the rear, and absence of a traditional grille give it an unmistakably futuristic identity. This polarises opinion: some find it elegantly minimal, others find it bland compared to the BMW iX or Volvo EX40.
At 4751 mm long and 1921 mm wide, the Model Y is a proper mid-size SUV. The long wheelbase (2890 mm) pays dividends in interior space. Ground clearance at 167 mm is lower than typical Indian SUVs — urban speed breakers require careful approach at speed. The large panoramic glass roof is spectacular but non-openable.
Interior & Cabin Technology
Inside, the Model Y takes automotive minimalism to its logical extreme. There are almost no physical buttons — the 15.4-inch central touchscreen controls virtually everything: mirrors, AC, driving modes, media, navigation, cameras. This approach takes adjustment for Indian buyers accustomed to tactile controls, but once mastered, the screen is fast and intuitive.
Cabin quality is good — vegan leather seats, a large open storage space under the centre console, and a front trunk (frunk) provide practical storage. The panoramic roof floods the cabin with light. Second-row headroom and legroom are excellent — tall passengers will find it comfortable.
The premium 17-speaker audio system is exceptional — among the best in any vehicle at this price. OTA software updates continuously add features, meaning the Model Y you own today will have more capabilities a year from now.
Battery & Range
In Indian real-world conditions, the Model Y RWD delivers approximately 350–390 km of range per charge in city driving. Highway speeds (100–120 km/h) reduce this to 300–340 km. Air conditioning use in India’s warm climate reduces range by approximately 8–12%, a factor that doesn’t significantly impact most daily use cases.
The long-range AWD variant extends real-world range to 430–470 km in city driving. For intercity travel between major Indian cities, the range is adequate with charging infrastructure along NH routes improving rapidly.
Charging Infrastructure & Speed
This is where India reality sets in. Tesla’s Supercharger network in India is expanding but remains limited compared to the US or Europe. In major metro areas (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai), Supercharger stations are operational. Outside these cities, public DC fast charging via ChargeZone, Tata Power, and EESL networks support CCS2 charging.
Home charging via a Tesla Wall Connector (11 kW) provides 80–100 km of range per hour. A full charge overnight is practical for daily commuters. DC fast charging at up to 250 kW (where available) can add 200+ km of range in 15 minutes.
Performance & Driving Experience
The Model Y RWD’s 283 bhp and 420 Nm deliver effortless, linear acceleration. The instant torque characteristic of electric motors means the Model Y responds immediately to throttle input — overtaking on Indian highways is effortless. The dual-motor AWD variant with 0–100 in 5 seconds feels genuinely supercar-quick for its size.
Autopilot (standard on both variants) handles highway lane centring, adaptive cruise, and emergency braking with commendable competence. Navigate on Autopilot makes motorway driving nearly autonomous with appropriate supervision. These features work well on India’s newer expressways and national highways.
Ride & Handling
The Model Y’s handling is sharp and engaging — the low centre of gravity from the underfloor battery pack helps. However, the suspension setup (designed for US road conditions) can feel firm on badly broken Indian roads. City potholing can be jarring on the base RWD variant without air suspension. The overall ride-handling balance is sporty rather than comfort-oriented.
Safety Features
Tesla’s safety credentials are exceptional. The Model Y earned 5-star ratings across all categories in global NCAP tests. Eight cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and forward-facing radar feed Tesla’s Autopilot system. Automatic Emergency Braking, Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Blind Spot Monitoring are all standard. The reinforced battery pack also provides structural rigidity benefits in crash scenarios.
Price, Variants & Running Costs
| Variant | Ex-Showroom Price |
|---|---|
| Model Y RWD | ₹59.89 lakh |
| Model Y Long Range AWD | ₹74.89 lakh |
Running cost is approximately ₹1.2–1.5 per km on home charging — versus ₹6–8 per km for a comparable petrol luxury SUV. Annual savings of ₹1.5–2 lakh for a 20,000 km/year driver partially offset the premium purchase price over 4–5 years.
Pros & Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exceptional Autopilot capability | Limited Supercharger network in India |
| OTA updates add features continuously | Low ground clearance (167mm) for Indian roads |
| Best-in-class performance and range | All-screen interface requires adjustment |
| 17-speaker audio — exceptional | No RHD spare tyre — puncture kit only |
| Massive frunk + boot space | Expensive premium over Indian EVs |
Verdict
The Tesla Model Y in India is a genuinely impressive technological product that delivers a driving experience unlike anything else available here. Autopilot, OTA updates, and performance are class-defining. The limitations are real though: limited Supercharger network, low ground clearance, and a steep price premium over competent Indian alternatives like the Mahindra XEV 9e or Tata Harrier EV.
If you live in a metro, have home charging capability, and primarily drive on highways and expressways, the Model Y RWD at ₹59.89 lakh is a compelling luxury EV choice. If charging infrastructure is uncertain or you need off-road ground clearance, Indian EVs offer better-suited alternatives. Buy if: You’re a tech-first buyer in a metro with home charging. Skip if: You regularly drive on rough roads or away from major cities.
