Volkswagen Taigun Review 2026 – Turbo SUV Tested

    support@wheelxpress.comBy support@wheelxpress.comJuly 3, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

The Volkswagen Taigun is the sibling SUV to the Skoda Kushaq, sharing the MQB-A0-IN platform but wearing a distinctly Volkswagen design identity. Where the Kushaq leans European pragmatic, the Taigun carries Volkswagen’s premium brand positioning — slightly more plush interiors, more aspirational badging, and a marginally higher price tag. In 2026, the Taigun gets styling refreshes and expanded technology to stay competitive in India’s most hotly contested SUV segment. Is the VW premium worth paying for?

    Design & Exterior

The Taigun’s design language is unmistakably Volkswagen — clean, precise, and understated. The 2026 update brings revised IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlamps on top variants, a redesigned front bumper with larger air intakes, and fresh alloy wheel designs. The signature IQ.LIGHT with dynamic indicators is a premium touch that adds drama to the otherwise conservative styling.

Body proportions are nearly identical to the Kushaq, at 4221 mm long. The rear gets a redesigned tail lamp cluster and a sportier bumper. GT Line variants (the sporty grade) add unique black contrast elements and red accents that give the Taigun a more aggressive presence.

Five exterior colours are available, including Curcuma Yellow (exclusive to Taigun GT), Reflex Silver, Carbon Steel, and Candy White. The dual-tone roof option is popular in urban markets.

    Interior & Cabin Quality

The Taigun’s interior exudes premium quality that edges slightly ahead of the Kushaq. Soft-touch materials are deployed more generously, and the overall colour and texture combination — particularly in the Almond Beige interior option — gives a more upscale feel. Volkswagen’s characteristic solid switchgear and well-damped controls provide tactile satisfaction that Korean rivals don’t quite match.

The 10.1-inch touchscreen sits centrally, flanked by proper physical AC controls — a practical decision. Ventilated front seats, wireless charging, and a flat-bottom steering wheel on GT variants enhance the driving environment. Rear seat space mirrors the Kushaq — adequate for two adults, adequate for three on short trips.

Storage organisation is thoughtful, with a deep centre console, door pockets that hold 1-litre bottles, and useful smartphone shelf near the gear lever. The 385-litre boot loads flat and is practical for daily family use.

    Infotainment & Technology

Volkswagen’s Play 3.0 infotainment system powers the 10.1-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, embedded navigation, and OTA software updates. Response times are fast, and the interface is intuitive. The optional 8-speaker Beats audio system delivers impactful sound quality that music enthusiasts will appreciate.

The digital cockpit (8-inch Virtual Cockpit) on upper variants is highly configurable, displaying navigation, media info, and performance data in a crisp display behind the steering wheel. IDA (Intelligent Driver Assistance) voice assistant handles calls, navigation, and media commands via natural language.

ADAS features include Front Assist with collision warning, Travel Assist for semi-autonomous highway driving, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Traffic Alert. These are substantive driver aids that make highway journeys safer and less fatiguing.

    Engine & Performance

The 1.0L TSI engine produces 115 bhp and 178 Nm — sprightly for city driving and surprisingly capable on highways. The 6-speed torque-converter automatic shifts with refinement, and the manual option suits enthusiast buyers on a tighter budget. There is some 3-cylinder character at idle, but it’s well-isolated in the cabin.

The 1.5L TSI with 150 bhp and 250 Nm through the 7-speed DSG is the performance choice. Active cylinder management shuts off two cylinders at light loads for improved efficiency — a clever technology for the segment. Acceleration is brisk and the gearbox responds sharply to paddle shifts, making the GT variant genuinely entertaining on a twisty road.

    Ride Quality & Handling

The Taigun shares the Kushaq’s MQB-A0-IN chassis tuning philosophy and delivers equally excellent ride-handling balance. Body roll is minimal, the steering is accurate with good on-centre feel, and the overall dynamics feel properly engineered rather than tuned purely for comfort. On rough city roads, the suspension copes well — though very sharp undulations can generate cabin thud.

Highway stability is excellent, and the Travel Assist system on upper variants makes long highway drives genuinely relaxed. NVH refinement is a Taigun strength — the cabin is quiet at triple-digit speeds.

    Safety Features

Like the Kushaq, the Taigun has earned a 5-star Global NCAP rating. Standard safety equipment includes 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, Multi-Collision Braking, Hill Hold Assist, and ISOFIX mounts. Upper variants add Front Assist, Travel Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Traffic Alert, and a 360-degree camera system — comprehensive for its segment.

    Price & Variants

    Variant Ex-Showroom Price
    Comfortline 1.0L MT ₹12.49 lakh
    Highline 1.0L AT ₹16.49 lakh
    Topline 1.0L AT ₹18.29 lakh
GT Plus 1.5L DSG ₹18.99 lakh
    GT Plus IQ.DRIVE 1.5L DSG ₹21.49 lakh

    Pros & Cons

    Pros Cons
5-star Global NCAP — exceptional safety No diesel option
Premium interior quality and materials Rear space not class-leading
1.5L DSG delivers engaging performance Smaller service network than mainstream brands
Travel Assist for semi-autonomous driving DSG gearbox can be jerky at low speeds
Refined, well-sorted driving dynamics Priced slightly higher than equivalent Kushaq

    Verdict

The Volkswagen Taigun 2026 is the quintessential driver’s compact SUV — a vehicle where the sum of engineering decisions results in a genuinely rewarding ownership experience. It doesn’t match the feature count of Korean rivals or the cabin space of larger alternatives, but it delivers a driving feel, build quality, and safety standard that is difficult to match in its segment.

The 1.5L GT variants in particular are among the most fun-to-drive compact SUVs in India. If engineering quality and driving dynamics matter more to you than specification sheets, the Taigun earns a strong recommendation. Recommended for: Driving enthusiasts, VW loyalists, and quality-first buyers with a budget of ₹18–22 lakh.
